Browns Bury Bears, Fields

My expectations for rookie QB Justin Fields wasn’t very high given the Bears were up against stiff competition in the Browns but my low expectations quickly turned to utter frustration. The Bears were trounced 26-6 in Cleveland and HC Matt Nagy did Justin Fields zero favors with his lack of imagination with the play calling. The Bears could only run 42 plays, get 6 first downs and muster only 47 yards of offense for the entire game. Nagy kept Fields in the pocket for the vast majority of the game with an offensive line that’s been mildly average at best and the result was Fields was sacked 9 times today. They were 1 for 11 on 3rd down and ran the ball 13 times all game. The defense did all they could to keep the Bears in the game before tiring out late in the 2nd half.

The Bears next face a pissed off Detroit Lions team who lost in the most unreal way possible. More on that a bit later.

Here’s ESPN Chicago’s Jonathan Hood & WSCR’s Laurence Holmes with their thoughts on this horrendous game:

WWE/AEW Musings

Big E celebrates his WWE Championship victory on Sept. 13.
  • CM Punk is back in wrestling and with AEW. The Second City Saint returned to the United Center in Chicago back on August 20 to a thunderous pop. It was a roar I hadn’t heard since the GOAT Michael Jordan played with the Bulls. His return has given a jolt to the budding promotion. His match with Darby Allin at All Out on September 5 told a great story. CM Punk seems perfectly happy to work with the younger talent to give them a rub… and that’s the way it should be.
  • AEW has added significant star power to a roster that was already loaded with it. They have added Ruby Soho, Adam Cole and Bryan Danielson. Adam Cole was the face of WWE’s NXT brand and one of the biggest stars in the business. Soho gives the women’s division added depth with an underrated performer who was completely mishandled in the WWE. Danielson represents the biggest coup for AEW as they now have one of the greatest in-ring performers of all time.
  • Big E finally cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase and beat Bobby Lashley to close out the Sept. 13 edition of RAW to become just the 4th black man to win the WWE Championship. It was a history making event and Big E’s win was met with a huge pop. He joins Bobby Lashley, The Rock and New Day stable-mate Kofi Kingston to win this title. Representation matters and seeing Big E, Lashley and Kofi win the title in recent years means young black kids can look at these three men and see themselves.
  • While Big E’s title win was special, let’s make one thing clear – the WWE championship is not the top prize in Vince McMahon’s company right now. The top prize is the belt that Roman Reigns holds – the Universal Championship. Wrestling 101 dictates that the top guy with the top prize goes last on the card. You’ll see that tonight when Roman Reigns defends the Universal Title against The Demon Finn Balor.

Final Thoughts

  • Remember earlier when I talked the Lions losing today… well here’s why and I have just two words – Justin Tucker:
  • The Chicago White Sox captured their 1st division title since 2008 and reached the playoffs in back to back years for the 1st time in team history. The Sox have dealt with injuries all year long so it will be interesting to see how deep they can go in the playoffs.
