The Monsters Are Really Cubs
The Bears suffered their 4th straight loss at the hands of the Vikings 19-13 on Monday night to drop their record to 5-5. The offense put in their worst performance of the season by far only mustering up 10 first downs(only 3 in the 2nd half) and 149 yards of offense. They converted only 2 of 11 on 3rd down. It was the kind of performance that set football back 50 years. The Bears only had the ball for a little over 24 minutes and ran just 50 plays. That’s right – 50 plays. The offensive line was incapable of handling the Vikings’ blitz schemes on 3rd down.
QB Nick Foles looked terrible most of the evening with his accuracy and reads and then suffered a leg/hip injury late in the 4th quarter. His status for their game at Green Bay is unknown.
Also unknown is the status of RB David Montgomery. He was unavailable on Monday due to a concussion. Without him in the lineup the Bears rushed for an abysmal 41 yards on 17 carries.
The defense had its share of hiccups as well. S Eddie Jackson looked lost on some plays. Rookie Jaylon Johnson is constantly being picked on & targeted by opposing offenses. Danny Trevathian’s costly offsides penalty in the 1st quarter kept a drive alive that should have ended. Once Akiem Hicks went down the front 7 was exposed.
Much was made of HC Matt Nagy giving up the play calling duties to OC Bill Lazor but the offense regressed even further if you can believe that. Matt Nagy is clearly on the hot seat and one wonders if he will make it through the rest of the season.
The blame shouldn’t, and must not, stop at Nagy. This mess of a team belongs at the doorstep of Bears GM Ryan Pace. When you look at his decisions since he took the job it’s not a stretch to say that he has failed at rebuilding this team. Save for a surprise 2018 division-winning season and it’s clear that Pace has done a disastrous job. If Matt Nagy is indeed let go at the end of the season then Pace needs to walk out right along side of Nagy.
This Bears team is toothless. They lack a competent management team. They lack a stout offensive line. They lack a true running back. Even their secondary & front line needs depth. These aren’t the Monsters of the Midway. They haven’t been Monsters for the better part of 35 years. They are who Bears fans thought they were – cubs.
