Escape From New York
The Bears started their Week 2 matchup with the Giants looking as though they would blow them out. What ended up transpiring was another uninspiring lapse in play that saw the Bears hang on to beat the Giants 17-13 after another last second stand.
It was a tale of two halves for the beloved. In the 1st half the Bears dominated the time of possession and produced 3 scoring drives that lead to 17 points. QB Mitch Trubisky looked effective and the defense was able to force 2 turnovers and get 3 sacks. In the 2nd half the Bears were unable to score after building a 17-0 halftime lead. The defense also stumbled at moments including giving up a 95-yard drive to the Giants to cut the score to 17-10. RB Saquan Barkley left the game in the 2nd quarter with an apparent ACL injury yet the Giants battled back and almost had the Bears on the ropes.
It was another ugly win but a win nonetheless. They have to get better on both sides of the ball as the season progresses. Next week the Bears face a deeply flawed yet high powered Falcons team. The Bears canโt afford to continue to be this inconsistent against better teams.
Week 2 in The NFL
Week 2 saw some fantastic games. The Cowboys overcame a 20 point deficit to knock off the Falcons. The Rams looked dominant against the Eagles while Kyle Murray continues to shine in Arizona. The defending champs needed OT to overcome the Chargers. The Chargers may have a star in the making as QB Justin Herbert threw for 311 yards in his NFL debut.
The bigger story is the number of injuries that occurred during Week 2. The Giantsโ Saquan Barkley, the 49ersโ Nick Bosa and Jimmy Garoppolo, the Chargersโ Tyrod Taylor, the Panthersโ Christian McCafferey, the Coltsโ Parris Campbell and the Broncosโ Drew Lock all had significant injuries that will impact their respective teams for the rest of the season.
Roman Reigns is the Heel We Deserve
Roman Reigns returned from his hiatus at SummerSlam and quickly proceeded to dispatch both Bray Wyatt & Braun Strowman to recapture the Universal Title at WWE Payback. Of particular interest is his newfound alliance with one-time Brock Lesnar advocate, Paul Heyman. With Heyman serving as his special counsel, Reigns has looked more serious & dangerous. This Sunday he will be defending the Universal Championship against his own real-life cousin Jey Uso. The storytelling of Reignsโ return has been brilliant. After Sunday when Reigns turns on his own cousin, family and bloodline the story of Romanโs turn to the dark side will be complete. The mere fact Jey Uso is oblivious to this is another masterstroke of storytelling:
Final Thoughts
- The Lakers lead the Western Conference Finals series against the Nuggets 2-0 thanks to Anthony Davisโ buzzer beating 3-pointer. The visuals:
- The Eastern Conference Finals has the Miami Heat up 2-1 in their series. Boston made it a series again after a 117-106 win on Saturday night. In Games 1 & 2 Boston grabbed double digit leads only to see it evaporate. Tensions for the Celtics reached their breaking point after Game 2. G/F Jaylen Brown could be heard shouting in a heated exchange with teammates.
- My Chicago White Sox became the 1st AL team to clinch a postseason berth on this past Thursday. This will mark the first time since 2008 that the White Sox have been in the postseason. This young team has a good opportunity to make it to the World Series for the 1st time since winning the title in 2005. Couldnโt be happier:
