If you’ve looked at any of my past blogs then you know that I’m something of a wrestling nerd.
The very first entertainment event I went to happened when I was five years old. My dad took me to the Rosemont Horizon(Rosemont, IL.), that’s the AllState Arena for you newbies, to see the American Wrestling Association. It’s a night that always resonates with me because it was at this moment that I knew I would like wrestling for life. The main event was a battle royal featuring the likes of Hulk Hogan, Bobby Heenan, Verne Gagne, Greg Gagne, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine & others.
What makes wrestling great is not just the wrestling itself but the characters and their ability to cut a promo. Cutting an effective promo can be the difference between being just a guy and a legend. Dusty Rhodes had his “Hard Times” promo. Randy Savage cut his infamous Cream Of The Crop promo. Stone Cold Steve Austin became Stone Cold when he cut his Austin 3:16 promo. CM Punk burned white hot after his legendary Pipebomb promo. The Miz resurrected his career with his Talking Smack promo. Paul Heyman, The Rock & Chris Jericho made their living on the mic but few wrestlers were better at cutting promos than the 16-time World Champion Ric Flair.
Here’s just a sampling of the GOAT(yes… Ric Flair is the GOAT) at work:
