The week leading up to the Bears’ Week 3 showdown at Kansas City was the epitome of a clown show. It started on Wednesday as QB Justin Fields spoke with reporters and talked about how he felt he was “robotic” and needed to play like he knows how to play. Asked what caused him to be robotic, Justin answered “maybe coaching” while also putting it on him to play better. Less than 2 hours later, Justin held another press conference to clarify his comments. Less than one hour later head coach Matt Eberflus announced LT Braxton Jones was placed on IR. All while this was happening, Bears DC Alan Williams abruptly resigned leaving Eberflus to continue calling plays on defense. The Bears distanced themselves from Williams almost immediately and offered no real statement on his resignation which left everyone to run wild with rumors.

The Bears vowed that there was no issue concerning Fields’ comments and the team would be ready to respond against the Chiefs. What transpired was a 41-10 trouncing at the hands of the Chiefs. With each week the losses get more embarrassing and the Bears look less and less like an actual NFL team.

The offense continues to look like a remedial JV team that couldn’t sustain drives or even get drives going. The Bears were 2/8 on 3rd down conversions, had 2 delay of game penalties and 2 turnovers. Justin Fields looked frustrated as he was sacked 3 times and hurried at least 10 times against an aggressive Chiefs defense that had no reason to respect what the Bears were attempting to do on offense. Fields finished 11/22 for 99 yards, 1 TD and an INT. When the offense can only generate 203 yards of offense you can’t win football games. WRs weren’t getting open and when they did they dropped passes.

The defense was even more atrocious as Patrick Mahomes only needed a little over 2 quarters to rack up this stat line – 24/33 for 272 yards & 3 TDs. He also added 3 rushes for 28 yards. This was a Chiefs offense that was averaging 18.5 over their 1st 2 games. They put up 41 today against a Bears defense that barely touched Mahomes. It was also another week of the Bears not being able to get off the field on 3rd downs. The Chiefs converted 10 of 14 3rd downs including 5 plays of 3rd and 5+ yards. The Chiefs ate when they got into the red zone as they scored on all 5 of their opportunities. It wasn’t until Blaine Gabbart & the 2nd stringers entered the game midway through the 3rd quarter that the Bears made plays. The defense may have picked off Gabbart twice for their 1st two takeaways of the season but they still have only 1 sack through 3 games.

Grading The Bears

Offense: 203 yards of offense isn’t going to get it done. Justin Fields throwing for 99 yards definitely won’t get it done. Wide receivers either not getting open or dropping passes won’t get it done. Grade: F

Defense: The 2 takeaways were against 2nd stringers. The Chiefs had over 350 yards & 41 points by the time Mahomes left the game. Where the hell was the pressure on the QB? Grade: F

Special Teams: They didn’t really factor into the game. I guess that’s a positive. Grade: C

Coaching: After a brutal week of press conferences the coaching staff did little to get the team prepared for Kansas City. Grade: F

The Good, Bad & Ugly

The Good: There’s nothing good about a 31-point beatdown on national TV.

The Bad: Let’s see – the defense not being able to get off the field on 3rd downs. The offense can’t get drives going because either the line can’t consistently pass protect or receivers can’t get separation or catch passes.

The Ugly: The Bears have now lost a franchise record 13 consecutive games and they’ve done while giving up 25 points or more during this stretch. Over the 1st 3 games this season, the Bears are averaging 15.7 points per game, good for 7th worst in the league. This organization has only 6 winning seasons since 2000 and 6 playoff appearances. In the Super Bowl era the Bears have 1 title and only 2 appearances. This has been abject disaster from top to bottom. The whole organization is a cesspool.

Head Coach Matt Eberflus & QB Justin Fields met with the media after this latest debacle:

What’s Next: The Bears return home to allow the 0-3 Denver Broncos to right their sinking ship. Here’s a terrible statistic for Bears fans: only 3% of NFL teams that start 0-3 make the playoffs. The 0-3 Bears will join the 97% to miss the playoffs.
