As this country honors the life & work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. there continues to be a whitewashing of his work. Over the course of the last 2 or more decades, conservatives have tried to paint a picture that MLK would be a conservative today. They would have you believe that they have always loved MLK but the truth is quite the opposite.
Take for instance the Bangor Daily News. The newspaper posted this on its Twitter page yesterday:
Editorial: "As we mark the 94th birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., we should take a step away from our divisive politics and recall his defining speech."

Historian Kevin M. Kruse quickly noticed the nonsense and offered facts on what the newspaper wrote about MLK’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech:
If you want a good example of how sanitized and sterilized we've made MLK's memory, here's the editorial the @bangordailynews ran on the day of his "defining speech."

It starts with scare quotes around "civil rights," and then worries how the March on Washington will paralyze DC, rob its businesses of work hours, and spark violence too. It then calls for an end to marches, altogether.

People would have you believe that everyone loved Dr. King and that he only spoke of coming together and being ‘color blind’. That was not even close to being the truth. Here is the truth:

When people talk about the life & work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr they need to speak the truth. We will not allow Dr. King’s memory and life’s work be sanitized so it can be accepted. Everyone needs to fully understand Dr. King’s message because it is a message that still resonates today. Maybe even more so…
