It seems the WWE is never able to keep momentum on a month to month basis. Whenever it looks like they’re on the right track, Vince McMahon & company make some insanely, head scratching moves that makes people question Vince’s sanity.
After a Crown Jewel PPV event in Saudi Arabia that was almost universally praised as the best PPV of the year, the WWE announced during its quarterly call this past week it turned a $250 million profit for its 3rd quarter. That is a tremendous number in this pandemic era when other companies are suffering or in the case of Ring Of Honor – closing its doors. Just when you think WWE is turning a corner here comes their typical balderdash.
Yesterday in the middle of the afternoon WWE decided to reveal via its Twitter page who the men’s & women’s traditional 5-on-5 teams will be for this month’s Survivor Series. Think about that for a second. This isn’t Backlash or TLC; this is Survivor Series. This PPV is supposed to be one of the big four pay-per-views that WWE has and THIS is how you promote your show? On social media on a college football Saturday afternoon? It seems the creative team for WWE closed up shop for the rest of 2021 after the Crown Jewel PPV. That was bad but what they did before that announcement was just ugly.
Right after WWE’s quarterly call on Thursday where they announced they made a record $250 million in the 3rd quarter the company announced the release of 18 wrestlers via the NY Post complete with the obligatory “We wish them the best in their future endeavors” line. The official reason given for these releases were due to “budget cuts”. Budget cuts? The same company that just posted $250 million profit in the 3rd quarter is using the excuse of budget cuts? This reeks of b.s.
Among the cuts were NXT fan favorites Keith Lee & Karrion Kross, both former NXT heavyweight champions. Also among the cuts were former RAW women’s champion & women’s tag team champion Nia Jax. It was speculated the reason for her release had to do with Jax’s decision to remain unvaccinated for COVID however she took to her Instagram to share her side of the story and refute the rumors for her dismissal:
ESPN’s & host of the Tuesday Wrestling Tuesday Podcast Jonathan Hood shared his thoughts on the latest rounds of WWE cuts:
When WWE makes cuts like these this close to the holidays it shows how classless they are and it makes it hard for fans to care when the company treats its talent like this. There’s a right way, a wrong way and then a b.s. way of doing things. When WWE chooses the latter they shouldn’t wonder why they’re losing fans by the droves.
Here’s hoping these talented wrestlers can land on their feet and continue to do great things.
