Bears’ Guns Too Fast For The Texans

The Bears wasted no time looking like a professional football team today against the Texans for four full quarters. The result was a 36-7 throttling of the woeful, hapless Texans. Dubbed The Ryan Pace Bowl, Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky(24/33 for 267 yards, 3TDs) outgunned the QB most Bears fans thought Pace should have grabbed: Deshaun Watson(21/30 for 219 yards, 1TD). To be fair, Watson’s offensive line looked worse than the Bears and their defense gave up 410 yards to a Bears offense that ranked 31st on the ground & 30th overall.

Khalil Mack gets the sack of QB Deshaun Watson for a safety during the Bears 36-7 mauling of the Texans.

The Bears defense that looked like they had checked out on the 2020 season resurfaced today. They harassed Deshaun Watson all day, sacking him 7 times, holding him to 4.2 yards per pass play and holding the team to 264 yards on offense. They also forced 2 turnovers on the Texans. Khalil Mack re-emerged with a sack, forced fumble, fumble recovery and a safety.

The Bears offense looked like a legitimate offense for the 1st time all season. They racked up 410 yards including 169 yards on the ground. RB David Montgomery had 11 carries for 113 yards and a TD. WR Allen Robinson had his best game of the season since Week 3 with 9 catches for 123 yards & a TD. The offensive line were able to block for Trubisky and open up Red Sea-like holes for the running backs.

Mathematically, the Bears are still alive for the last playoff spot at 6-7. Realistically, the Bears are still far on the outside looking in. The Bears would have to run the table and hope both the Vikings & Cardinals finish at 8-8. The only other scenario is both the Bears & Cards finish at 8-8 but the Vikings must finish at 7-9. Next week is a must win game on the road against the Vikings followed by a road game with the Jags and the season finale at home against Aaron Rodgers & the Packers.

While the season is not mathematically over, this shouldn’t distract the Bears organization from making meaningful changes in the offseason. As I said in last week’s post, it’s time to reboot the Bears. That statement still stands.

Final Thoughts

  • AEW really has the chance to do something special with their working relationship with rival promotion Impact Wrestling. One just hopes that egos & politics don’t get in the way. This has the potential to be a game changer in the industry.
  • WWE’s final PPV of the year is TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs. I am not excited for this. WWE is really on cruise control as they focus on getting ready for the Royal Rumble & WrestleMania season. The two matches that should intrigue fans are WWE Champion Drew McIntyre taking on AJ Styles & Universal Champion Roman Reigns taking on Kevin Owens.
  • Speaking of WWE… who all is excited about Carmella challenging Sasha Banks for the SmackDown Women’s Title? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
  • The NBA preseason is underway and as expected the Bulls were their usual selves: bad at basketball. I don’t expect much from this team even with a new front office & new head coach in Billy Donovan. The Bulls will be just interesting enough to win about 30-32 games this season.
  • Finally, the award for Best Finesse Job by an NBA Player goes to…. Clippers forward Paul George. Apparently ownership must not have watched Pandemic P’s horrid playoff performance in the Bubble. If they did then I would question their sanity as to why the organization would give George a 4 year/$190 extension to remain with the Clippers. In the end I guess it really won’t matter especially if the Lakers remain healthy. The defending world champs added depth in the form of Marc Gasol, Montrezl Harrell, Wesley Matthews & Dennis Schroder. Hope that money was worth it, Clippers Nation.
