Things Fall Apart For The Bears

The Bears fell to the Titans 24-17 in Nashville today to drop their record to 5-4. The beloved have now dropped 3 straight after starting the season 5-1. As has been the case all season long, Matt Nagy’s offense looked putrid for 3 quarters before mounting a couple of stat-padding, garage time drives to make the game look more respectable than it really was.

The Bears’ lack of push on the offensive line was again on display as the offense could only muster 56 rushing yards on 20 carries for a 2.8 average. RB David Montgomery does not hit what little holes that do exist with any power(he also had a crucial fumble that led to a Titans run back for a TD) and the entire league is on to Coradelle Patterson(yeah… we don’t need to see him in the backfield again). Nick Foles continues to uninspired at QB and the passing game has little bite. The offense continued its lack of scoring & adjustments in the 3rd quarter going scoreless for the 7th time this season. Chicago has only managed to score 17 points in the 3rd quarter this season. The team will tell you that they pieced some things together in the 4th quarter and scored 17 points. Reality will be that those late drives were inconsequential to the outcome of the game. When you don’t convert 3rd downs(the Bears were 2 for 15) you don’t put yourself in position to win ballgames. When you can’t sustain drives either due to penalties, giving up sacks or turnovers then you don’t put yourself in position to win ballgames.

The Bears’ offense looked atrocious in their 24-17 loss to the Titans.

The defense did what it could to keep the Bears in the game but as with the case all season you can’t ask your defense to do everything. The defense gave up 228 yards & 17 points. That should be enough to get a win.

The Bears are on the tail end of this tough stretch of 5 games and they have yet to record to a win. They still have the Vikings next Monday night at home & then the Packers at Lambeau on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. If the Bears finish this stretch 5-6 they will be hard pressed to make the playoffs. As of today, they’re out of the playoff picture. This team looks like an 8-8 team. That’s not going to cut it. Should they miss the playoffs again(and nothing from I’ve seen so far tells me they’re going to make it) then some serious questions need to be asked.

We may be at the point where this franchise needs to start from scratch – again. The problem though starts from the top as the beloved have an ownership that is incapable of putting football people in place who know how to build a team from the top down to make them competitive year in and year out.
