The NFL Is Back…. Hooray?
The NFL is back… and I might be the only person in America who is not excited that they’re playing. Don’t get me wrong — football is my favorite sport by far but given the circumstances we’re living in right now I just can’t sink my teeth into the upcoming season. I even participated in two fantasy drafts(both of them are money leagues) thinking it might get me pumped up. It didn’t. I’m simply in a different mindset right now. Maybe it will take watching the product for me to get me back into it… but I’m not holding out hope.
Jason Whitlock is a Clown
I know this is not breaking news but much like the current occupant of the White House I keep thinking there is going to be a new low for Jason Whitlock only to discover there is no rock bottom for him. After the shooting of Jacob Blake, several NBA players spoke out about the shooting and the continued police brutality in this nation. Clippers head coach Doc Rivers spoke eloquently and passionately about the subject. LeBron James also added his opinion:
Leave it to Whitlock to respond with a hit piece accusing LBJ of being a bigot and saying the LeBron is not afraid of the police. When the Milwaukee Bucks led a walkout on their playoff game in response to the shooting Whitlock accused the team, and the league which followed the Bucks’ stand by postponing all games scheduled, of “post traumatic Black Lives Matter disorder.”
Whitlock knows better than this. He knows there is racism. He knows it exists. What boggles my mind is he knows these things yet chooses to use his platform to appease the “shut up & dribble” crowd. LeBron has teenage sons who could one day be stopped by police. LeBron, just like every black father and/or mother, has to have the speech with his kids on how to conduct yourself when with police just praying that if such an interaction happens that his kids make it out alive. When LeBron spoke out, he wasn’t just talking about himself. He was speaking for millions of black families who have that same feeling with police. He was using his platform to continue the discussion. Whitlock is more concerned about getting checks and appeasing a society that really doesn’t give a sh*t about him. I hope Whitlock can sleep at night knowing his modern day Uncle Ruckus act is not moving the discussion and movement along.
But If You Just Comply…
After every interaction with police, you always hear the crowd tell black people, “well if they would just comply with police.” Funny how that crowd doesn’t seem to follow its own advice and despite the fact they don’t follow the advice they spew their interactions with police end WAY different. Let’s take this encounter in Washington state as one example:
If that doesn’t move you then how about this one: a man in Minnesota kills his wife, shoots two of his neighbors and then engages with a shootout with police. This man fired 40 shots at police officers… and yet was somehow taken alive. I don’t know… I would think that firing 40 shots at officers would constitute non-compliance and certainly would’ve been the time for police officers to use their guns to stop him. They obviously had zen-like patience while their lives were LITERALLY in danger. *kanye shrug*
Final Thoughts
- My Chicago White Sox are 26-15, in 1st place in the Central Division and have the 3rd best record in baseball. They are a fun team to watch… and they’re only going to get better. #ChangeTheGame
- WWE CEO Vince McMahon is banning his talent from using third-party sites like Twitch & Cameo claiming that they own the talents’ names, characters and likeness and talent using their characters to promote products and using 3rd party apps were “detrimental” to the company. It is just another episode by McMahon to keep talent under his thumb. WWE claims to own their real names, stage names & likeness despite the talent being listed as independent contractors. I don’t think it’s fair to the talent they should be denied the opportunity to generate other streams of income. It’s also unfair that these athletes put their bodies on the line yet don’t have health insurance coverage.
- Thanks to comedian/producer KevOnStage(@kevonstage) I was introduced to a young artist by the name of Yebba. She is awesome:
- We lost 3 icons in the past 10 days. Hall of Fame baseball player Lou Brock passed away yesterday at the age of 81. He spent most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. His trade from the Cubs to the Cards garnered recent attention given the surprising details behind the trade. Hall of Fame basketball coach John Thompson passed away last Monday at age 78. He coached Georgetown basketball leading the Hoyas to two Final Four appearances and the 1984 NCAA championship. He coached several Hall of Famers including Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo and Allen Iverson. They all credit him with being a father, mentor and educator. The biggest shock was on August 28 when “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman passed away at age 43 after a 4 year battle with colon cancer. Boseman’s death was gut wrenching but his life served as inspiration. While battling colon cancer Boseman was able to film Captain America: Civil War, Message From The King, Marshall, Infinity War, Endgame, 21 Bridges, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Da 5 Bloods and Black Panther. No one knew of Chadwick’s battle with cancer. He chose not to reveal his diagnosis and focused on living life to the fullest. He did that & more. Chadwick, like John Thompson and Lou Brock, will be sorely missed. Rest in honor & power my kings. Job well done…
